Anti Mormonism has existed since before the Church was organized.
Opposition began almost immediately after Joseph Smith shared the First Vision. Local ministers rejected his account. Neighbors mocked him. When word spread that he claimed to have gold plates, hostility increased. He was harassed in Harmony, Pennsylvania and forced to relocate. In Kirtland he faced lawsuits, public slander, and mob violence. In Missouri the Saints were killed and driven from their homes under an extermination order. In Illinois, opposition escalated until Joseph Smith was murdered in Carthage Jail in 1844. Enemies believed killing the Prophet would end the Church. It strengthened it.
Anti Mormonism simply changed forms.
Historically, critics used violence, legal pressure, and public propaganda while spreading lies and exagerated half truths. Today the tools are different, but the objective is the same. Undermine faith. Discredit prophetic authority. Stop growth.
Two Primary Sources of Anti-Mormonism
Former Mormons
The first is former members who openly oppose the Church. In many cases, belief once shaped their identity, relationships, and major life decisions. Leaving creates loss. Public opposition reframes that loss as insight. If others follow, it validates their choice. The louder the criticism, the more secure the exit feels. The more justified they feel in living a lifestyle that contradicts what they used to believe.
Other Christian Sects
The second is Christians of other denominations who claim Latter day Saints worship a different Jesus and reject salvation through grace. These claims misrepresent core doctrine. The Church teaches salvation through the grace of Jesus Christ, covenant relationship with Him, repentance, and discipleship. Critics repeat inherited talking points without serious engagement with primary sources.
Opposition to the Church has never stopped its growth. From mobs in Missouri to critics online, the pattern remains consistent. The Church moves forward. Opposition reacts.
As I study anti-mormon works, and see the lies and influence of the adversary behind it, it strengthens my faith in the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.
